Baju Kebaya Cake

I really enjoyed decorating this cake, maybe it sort like a challenged for me to practice my royal icing pipping. What is Baju Kebaya? see below for my blog reader who are not from South East Asia.

I have a few pairs of Baju Kebayas

A Kebaya is a traditional blouse-dress combination that originates from Indonesia and worn by women in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Burma, Singapore, southern Thailand. It is sometimes made from sheer material such as silk, thin cotton  or semi-transparent nylon or polyester adorned with brocade or floral pattern embroidery. Kebaya usually worn with a sarong or batik kain panjang, or other traditional woven garment such as ikat, songket with a colorful motif.

The kebaya is the national costume of Indonesia, although it is more accurately endemic to the Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese peoples. (extract from Wikipedia)

Baju Melayu Cekak Musang Cake - Munirah's gift to the Groom

I was commissioned to do a Baju Melayu Cake by Ms Munirah, that is the folded version not a full length Baju Melayu. What is Baju Melayu? Please see below.....(for my blog reader who are not from the South East Asia).

This was a chocolate cake covered with fondant. I think, what makes this Baju Melayu looks authentic was the 5 buttons that adorned the dress. I make a small pearl painted with pearl sheen color ( of course an edible paint) on a small gold plate, just look like my late father's Baju Melayu buttons. I vividly remember he always lost a button every year (he usually used these buttons twice a year) until my late mother tied all these buttons along with one string so it will not gone missing again.

Baju Melayu  is a traditional Malay outfit for men. It literally translates as 'Malay shirt' and consists of two main parts. The first being the baju (long sleeved shirt) itself which has a raised stiff collar known as the cekak musang collar (literally fox's lease). The second part is the trousers. The two parts are made out of the same type of fabric which is usually silk, cotton, or a mixture of polyester and cotton. A skirt-type adornment is also commonly worn with the Baju Melayu, which is either the "kain samping", made out of songket  cloth or the kain sarung, made out of cotton or a polyester mix. Both are loops of fabric which are folded around the wearer's waist. A jet-black or dark coloured headgear called the songkok can also worn to complete the attire. (extract from Wikipedia)

Cupcake Tree - Mior Asri and Norliyana's Wedding

It's been quite sometime I did not drive long distance ALONE. My nephew's wedding was held on the weekend and coincided with the year end school holidays and as usual it's raining season in December. So based on my experience and all these variables, the traffic on the highway will be reasonably heavy. The distance from my house, Shah Alam to Parit Buntar is around 300 kilometers, that is estimated around 3.5 hours drive.

I had to pack all the 500 pieces of small cupcakes into a few boxes so it will fit nicely into my cute little Kelisa and I have to ensure these boxes does not move from side to side. After putting all these boxes nicely I realized the boards for the cupcake tree were not in the car.....oh my, I had to rearrange all the boxes again to fit these boards in the car...another 30 minutes of rearranging.

By 6 pm I started my journey, 10 minutes later it stated to drizzle, drizzle and drizzle........slowly getting heavy and heavier......drizzle,  drizzle.... heavy ... drizzle...... for the next 4 hours!!. My car screen wiper worked extra hard to wade the rain water.

I have three brothers, who, should I say, they were rather "worried" when they knew I drove alone at night in an unfavorable weather. They called, text messages several times just to know where am I... to an extent I'm started getting annoyed or rather irritated.......why can't I just report to one person and they shared the news!!!!......Nevertheless, I enjoyed my journey and I reached the destination by 10 pm on the dot, even though I lost my way just 500 meters before reaching my brother's house.

Wedding Cake, Gold and Ivory - Syakirah Karim

This wedding cake looks stunning when placed on the its table. However, I felt the flowers of the cake do not aligned with the theme colors of the hall's deco.

The third tier makes the appearance of the overall cake looks elegant
Detailed works on the third tier using stencil and added a few royal icing pipping to give the lacy effect

The wedding cake cutting ceremony, the flowers of the cake had been changed.

Engagement Cake - White Floral Motifs with Blue

My client showed me a photo to give me some ideas what she's really wanted the cake looks like. However, she wanted white with sky blue color combinations. She gave me the sample of the blue color that was on the lighter side. I informed her the floral motifs might not be outstanding because the colors lack of contrast. Since these colors were her engagement theme colors, requesting her to change to royal blue was out of the question.

Then it just stroked my mind using blue sheen color, where I never try before. Since I got ample time, I experimented a few ways to make the floral motifs outstanding. Choosing the correct floral motifs too is important so it won't look overcrowded.

This was a 6 inches love-shaped chocolate cake. Very pretty!!!

Tools Box Cake

This tools box cake perhaps for somebody who is very handy in the house........

Wedding Cake - Siti Nur Aizat

When I reached the venue, Restoren Zam Zam Arabic Food, the hall section, it was quite late, only a few people left. I was caught in a Saturday night jam in Shah Alam, I only had 45 minutes to do the set-up. Aaargh!!!! where the cake table???. Where's the person-in-charge???. Nobody responded to my plea...............a few waitresses just stared at me blankly, mmm, they does not look like Malaysian.

"Kek letak di sini kot." (The cake should be on this ). I turned my back and saw someone pushing a cart towards me. He introduced himself as the official photographer of the event. Yeah, my saviour!!!.

Car Cake - Hantaran Siti Nur Aizat

This car was 12 inches lengthwise, smaller than usual, reason, to accommodate the "hantaran" tray size.  I discovered it was very challenging because all the accessories of the car were very tiny.

Pink Peacock Wedding Cake - Ganez and Vani Wedding

Initially I was very hesitant to take this order, however the bride-to-be called me several time persuading me to do her wedding cake.

Logistic factor was the main reason of my hesitation. She wanted a three tier wedding cake with a peacock topper and the wedding will be held in Seremban, that is around 90 kilometers from Shah Alam. After giving her a few options on the cake, she still insisted on the three tier cake. She's willing to incurred the extra transportation charges which I think was quite high.

On the day of delivery, I was feeling quite weary may be due to lack of sleep. To avoid falling asleep while driving, I bought "asam boi" (a salty fruit preservative)  at one of the R & R along the highway, well not a healthy habit actually.

After one and a half hours, I reached the destination. Quite a havoc, contractors were still doing the setting-up. I managed to find the supervisor of the event, who I presumed was in a very stressful mode. There was a small commotion when the contractors could not find the cake table that suppose to be on the stage.........after 30 minutes they find the table!!!!, I had to wait another 20 minutes for them to find the table cloth and setting of the table. Then, I felt the stress of waiting!!!!.

Corn Pudding Cake

It seems ages I did not make Corn Pudding Cake, until I received a text message from my niece, Farhana, "Makcik, I missed your Corn Pudding Cake, my birthday is coming soon.....(I can imagined her eyes was fluttering)" sort of asking me politely what she wanted for her birthday.

This Corn Pudding Cake is a bit of time consuming and must "have a high degree of patience", but it is delicious and refreshing. The pudding have to be stirred constantly under a low heat, until it slowly thickened and the aroma of the corn......mmm......indescribable. If its heated abruptly, the pudding will curdle and under-cook. The original recipe uses milk but I change to santan (coconut milk). The taste is wallah....delicious.....but you can keep only 2 days in room temperature (tropical) and only one week in the fridge.

The Corn Pudding Cake is covered with fresh cream and dessicated coconut.

Boat Cake

I made several mistake when decorating this cake....maybe I was not feeling well at that time........

Number Cake

This Number 5 cake with 2 Ultramans actually a short notice order. That was why the cake board was extra large for this cake.

Chocolate Fudge Cake for Hari Raya

This Chocolate Fudge Cake only popular amongst my regular client. Most of them order for their Hari Raya "Open House". This Chocolate Fudge Cake uses bitter chocolate as one of the ingredient.

Selamat Hari Raya Puasa

Syawal had nearly reached the end, so I can still wish all my blog reader a Happy Eid.....

After my long holidays, I felt “time” has not been kind to me, 24 hours per day seems insufficient for me to do all the things that I needed to accomplish. I’ve been helping a few of my friends to set up their own blog which were very time consuming, however the results were very self-satisfying.

This Hari Raya was my first year without my mother, technically I did not really celebrate Hari Raya for the past 4 years since she got a stroke. However, this year, in my opinion my Hari Raya was quite cheerful due to the presence of my niece’s children, 3 years and 6 months old baby.

First Syawal, I received a sad news that one of my office colleague (Ms M.A.) had passed away due to cancer, I had met her six years ago before she’s decided to do her third major operation, to remove a tumor. Since I had a similar surgery, she had asked me for some advise, then I knew she’s not getting any better........She’s informed all her friends that she’s had overcomed cancer after going through chemotherapy . Physically she’s look normal and seems recovering. She had a very strong will to live. She told me all she wished for was to see her youngest son celebrate his 17 birthday....her wish was granted and lived 8 years after her first major operation,  I guessed God was kind to give her “time” that she needed........it was a bonus for her, Al-fatihah....

March 2005, I've just recuperating from a major surgery,

 in front was Ms M.A.
